A child. A future. A Child becomes the Future.

An African Child. A Future?

The Day of the African Child is celebrated on June 16 to honor the memory of the hundreds of South African school children who were killed in 1976 in their street protest to plead for better quality of their education. This day also draws attention to the difficult situation of many African children today.

Only in Kenya
- almost 1.5 million children do not attend primary school
- only 20% of the children attends secondary school
- are 1 million aids orphans
- suffer 20% of the children under age 5 of severe malnutrition

With its aid programs ChildsLife supports these children who live in extreme poverty and try to survive day by day.
An orphaned child in the slum, a child in the dry emaciated rural area. Both suffering from malnutrition and lack of education. No hope for a future.

ChildsLife offers children a change for a better future with education and school meals. Knowledge gives the child the possibility to take care of itself in the future, and for its family and community. ChildsLife provides education to 4.300 children in Kenya.

ChildsLife projects in Kenya experience extreme drought

Kenya is currently affected by a period of prolonged drought. Some even say this is the worst drought in ten years. The Maasai people, living in Kajiado region where ChildsLife supports various education projects, are desperate. The landscape is dry and there is no rainfall. There is hardly any water for the people and their animals. Cattle are the main source of income for the community, thus when water is this scarce, people and animals suffer.

The long period of drought has caused situations of major distress for the Maasai community. Many cattle died because there is not enough grass to feed them. People are now even coming to the doors of the ChildsLife local office seeking for food for their children, because they have no income from their livestock. The health of their children is seriously undermined and the children are malnourished. Children are left under the care of the guardians so their parents can move to other areas in search of pasture and water for their herds. School classes are empty, because for many children the long walk to school is too heavy.

The emergency is pressing, cattle are continuously dying, food prices are up and keep rising. ChildsLife is currently offering emergency assistance by purchasing food as well as water to fill up the tanks ChildsLife put in place previously but it is hardly sufficient.
More help is absolutely necessary!!

ChildsLife is planning a large scale water project in this region to offer a permanent solution for this recurring situation. Since this is however a long process, money is needed now, to tend to the terrible situation at hand.

Please support ChildsLife with a donation to offer relief to this community.

Penske Logistics receives ChildsLife Award

The ChildsLife Yearly Appreciation Award 2008 goes to Penske Logistics. Erik van Egmond, managing director of Penske Logistics Europe, received the Award from Patricia Korver – Kicak, director ChildsLife International.

With the annual award ChildsLife recognizes individuals and organisations that have provided exceptional support of ChildsLife’s work to improve the lives of poor and disadvantaged children around the world. The award carries a quote by Sir Winston Churchill “We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give”.

In July 2008, Penske Logistics Europe donated its services and redesigned and outfitted the ChildsLife 600 meter warehouse for better efficiency, designed a new computer inventory system and trained ChildsLife staff in the latest inventory management techniques. Also through a five-year partnership, Penske will continue to donate its services of logistic administration to help ChildsLife reduce operational costs and modernize its storage of donated goods.

The result will help ensure food, clothing, medical and other critical supplies are quickly and efficiently delivered to needy children and their families around the world allowing more funding to go directly to aid programs and increased efficiency in the distribution of emergency supplies.

“Penske offers  solutions and not just “do it this way”, said Patricia Korver - Kicak, director of ChildsLife. “With the help of Penske’s expertise, ChildsLife is able to reduce operational costs, expand our delivery of life-saving supplies and reach out to even more children in need."

ChildsLife delivers an average $5 million worth of goods each year to programs in Africa and Eastern Europe, storing tons of supplies in its warehouse located next to its headquarters in the Netherlands. ChildsLife provides aid to more than 16.000 children monthly and has distributed aid to more than 30 countries worldwide.
