Children in front of one of the schools

After visiting several primary schools in remote Machakos District in Kenya and seeing hungry children sitting at their desks, unable to concentrate to learn and play, ChildsLife decided to expand its feeding programme in Kenya. In November, ChildsLife began feeding once-a-day hundreds of children at Kathamboni, Mathemba, Syatu and Kiumbwani schools.

In addition to the feeding programme, ChildsLife is raising funds for water tanks and roof catchment systems for two primary schools, which are needed to collect drinking water for the children.

The Maasai waterpump is operational!

16 November, 2009   -

“This water pump is not a dream of only one day but is bringing renewed hope to the community.”

There was much excitement when gallons of water started gushing from the dry earth. The borehole can fulfill not only the need for clean water for the school and its students but for the entire community of about 6.000 people. Now people need to walk only 15 minutes instead of 45 minutes to get water.

Pipelines will transport the water to several collection points where water can be collected for a small fee. With this fee the running and maintenance of the pump and associated equipment can be paid, thus avoiding dependence on foreign donors for the Maasai in this region. This project has been made possible with the generous assistance and GKN U.K. through  Global Angels (U.K.).

Yearly ChildsLife – American Express Food Rally results in 3 tons food!

28 October, 2009   -

For the third consecutive year, ChildsLife organised a volunteers program for American Express employees. During a food rally held in October, teams of volunteers spent the day collecting donated food from customers at supermarkets in the region of Haarlem.

The volunteers of the international credit card company collected almost 3.000 kilograms of rice, cooking oil, canned vegetables and fruit, sugar and flower and other food items that will be sent to ChildsLife programs in Eastern Europe. In all, the volunteers collected 130 boxes of non-perishables that will be delivered to needy children and their families in Eastern Romania and Moldova. Just on time for the harsh winter period and Christmas time.

Each year, American Express workers volunteer with ChildsLife as part of the companies Good Citizenship Program, which supports organizations that cultivate meaningful opportunities for civic engagement.

ChildsLife appreciates the enthusiastic contribution of both the American Express employees and the supermarket customers!

Appeal for funds on behalf of victims Philippine floods

7 October, 2009   -

Residents from all over the Philippines were pleading for help as flood waters brought by typhoon Ketsana washed over their streets. The heavy rains that poured in the weekend of the 25th of September caused massive flooding. Bahay Aurora, a home for street children in Baras Rizal which received support from ChildsLife, was badly affected.

The water reached up to 2 meters in Baras Rizal. The new building of the home fortunately has two floors, so the children and their caretakers were able to climb to the second floor to escape the rising waters. Luckily all 45 young children and their caretakers are safe, but there is much flood damage to the buildings, the terrain and the furniture.

Water, food and hygiene products are currently most essential. ChildsLife therefore immediately donated 1400 euro out of the emergency fund we have exactly for these crisis situations.

Please help us assist these victims of the floods in the hard times ahead.

Helping children effectively: 2010 program reviews

12 October, 2009   -

We want to continuously support programs helping children effectively. ChildsLife reviews annually the projects it supports worldwide. After careful evaluation, we will confirm in November 2009 the programs that we will continue to fund in 2010. Where the need is great, existing programs will continue to be funded and new programs may be started. Some existing programs may be scaled down. In these difficult financial times, we closely examine community needs, cost and effectiveness to decide which programs ensure the best use of the available funds. Our plans for 2010 will be published on our website later this year.

Machakos school water project

10 September, 2009   -

Earlier this year ChildsLife International partnered with Dutch Rotary clubs Velsen, Beverwijk and Santpoort to realize a school water project in Machakos District, Kenya. Water is scarce in this region and severe drought has hit the area repeatedly.  Now, with the support of ChildsLife and Rotary, rain harvesting systems are being installed at three schools, the Kathamboni Primary School, the Kathamboni Secondary School and the Uiini Primary School. With rain gutters and water tanks, thousands of litres of water can be gathered in the rainy season. Therefore hundreds of students between 3 and 18 years old will have access to clean drinking water at school, all year round.

A child. A future. A Child becomes the Future.

An African Child. A Future?

The Day of the African Child is celebrated on June 16 to honor the memory of the hundreds of South African school children who were killed in 1976 in their street protest to plead for better quality of their education. This day also draws attention to the difficult situation of many African children today.

Only in Kenya
- almost 1.5 million children do not attend primary school
- only 20% of the children attends secondary school
- are 1 million aids orphans
- suffer 20% of the children under age 5 of severe malnutrition

With its aid programs ChildsLife supports these children who live in extreme poverty and try to survive day by day.
An orphaned child in the slum, a child in the dry emaciated rural area. Both suffering from malnutrition and lack of education. No hope for a future.

ChildsLife offers children a change for a better future with education and school meals. Knowledge gives the child the possibility to take care of itself in the future, and for its family and community. ChildsLife provides education to 4.300 children in Kenya.

ChildsLife projects in Kenya experience extreme drought

Kenya is currently affected by a period of prolonged drought. Some even say this is the worst drought in ten years. The Maasai people, living in Kajiado region where ChildsLife supports various education projects, are desperate. The landscape is dry and there is no rainfall. There is hardly any water for the people and their animals. Cattle are the main source of income for the community, thus when water is this scarce, people and animals suffer.

The long period of drought has caused situations of major distress for the Maasai community. Many cattle died because there is not enough grass to feed them. People are now even coming to the doors of the ChildsLife local office seeking for food for their children, because they have no income from their livestock. The health of their children is seriously undermined and the children are malnourished. Children are left under the care of the guardians so their parents can move to other areas in search of pasture and water for their herds. School classes are empty, because for many children the long walk to school is too heavy.

The emergency is pressing, cattle are continuously dying, food prices are up and keep rising. ChildsLife is currently offering emergency assistance by purchasing food as well as water to fill up the tanks ChildsLife put in place previously but it is hardly sufficient.
More help is absolutely necessary!!

ChildsLife is planning a large scale water project in this region to offer a permanent solution for this recurring situation. Since this is however a long process, money is needed now, to tend to the terrible situation at hand.

Please support ChildsLife with a donation to offer relief to this community.
