Helping children effectively: ChildsLife’s 2010 plans

23 December, 2009   -

Kenya

In the Kibera slums of Nairobi, ChildsLife will pay teachers and cooks salaries at Stara School, feed pupils at Mchanganyiko Kindergarten and assist additional mothers with HIV/AIDS via our Home Based Care Program.

Construction of the Vocational Training Centre will also commence early next year.

In Kajiado district, support for the Maasai community will focus on ChildsLife’s school feeding program, provision of school supplies and improvement of school infrastructure.

Children in Machakos schools will receive assistance through installation of water collection systems and ChildsLife’s school feeding program.

ChildsLife will open two ‘community offices’, in Kenya. In the Kibera slums and in Kajiado for the Maasai community. With these offices ChildsLife is in close contact with those we serve. At grassroots level our representatives are trouble shooters and problem solvers for the community as well as our ‘eyes and ears’ on the ground.

Romania and Moldova

ChildsLife will continue supporting institutions, daycare centres, homes for handicapped children and kindergartens in Romania and Moldova.

A brand new ChildsLife project is the “First Step in Life Program” in Romania. Mothers and their newborn babies are offered a maternity package with baby clothes, lotion, powder and other baby necessities, courtesy of ChildsLife. Combined with social assistance offered in the hospital the aim of this ChildsLife program is to avoid child abandonment.

Other countries

ChildsLife will of course continue to cooperate with numerous partners to reach children in need in Surinam, Uganda, Burkina Faso, Zimbabwe and the Philippines.

Detailed results over 2009 and plans for 2010 will be published in our next annual report. For regular updates on projects please read the news section on our website.

Hungry children benefit from expansion feeding programme in Kenya

9 December, 2009   -

Children in front of one of the schools

After visiting several primary schools in remote Machakos District in Kenya and seeing hungry children sitting at their desks, unable to concentrate to learn and play, ChildsLife decided to expand its feeding programme in Kenya. In November, ChildsLife began feeding once-a-day hundreds of children at Kathamboni, Mathemba, Syatu and Kiumbwani schools.

In addition to the feeding programme, ChildsLife is raising funds for water tanks and roof catchment systems for two primary schools, which are needed to collect drinking water for the children. Similar water tanks and roof catchment systems have already been built at Kathamboni Primary and Secondary School and Uiini Primary school in the same region.

Because of these systems, the children have fresh water daily, even in periods of extreme drought. If you would like to donate financially to help continue these programs, contact info@childslife.nl.

The Maasai waterpump is operational!

16 November, 2009   -

the first water gushes out of the ground

“This water pump is not a dream of only one day but is bringing renewed hope to the community.”

There was much excitement when gallons of water started gushing from the dry earth. The borehole can fulfill not only the need for clean water for the school and its students but for the entire community of about 6.000 people. Now people need to walk only 15 minutes instead of 45 minutes to get water.

Pipelines will transport the water to several collection points where water can be collected for a small fee. With this fee the running and maintenance of the pump and associated equipment can be paid, thus avoiding dependence on foreign donors for the Maasai in this region. This project has been made possible with the generous assistance and GKN U.K. through  Global Angels (U.K.).

We asked Moses Masek, ChildsLifes Maasai community coordinator who is a Maasai and lives in the area, how the water affects the lives of the Maasai population in this area:
“We have set up a community committee to ensure that the pump is working efficiently and the water distributed fairly. As much as we would like to change people it takes time. With the new borehole many people have presented ideas but we are trying to make them new ideas.”

  • Water pump located at Maasai Oloyiankalani Secondary School
  • Fresh water for students in the schools
  • For the entire community and their livestock
  • 174 meters depth, water of highest purity
  • Yield of 20.000 liters per hour
  • Masonry tank to store the water
  • Separate water troughs for the cattle away from human consumption pints
  • Water supply serving more than 6.000 people

ChildsLife Delivers its 500th Shipment of Supplies to Needy Children and their Families

21 February, 2008   -

ChildsLife International today sent its 500th transport of food, clothing an dother supplies to needy children and their families.

Helping celebrate the landmark achievement were ChildsLife goodwill ambassadors actress Dominique van Vliet and television presenter Rob Geus.

Van Vliet and Geus came to ChildsLife International global headquarters in The Netherlands and helped fill the transport truck with shoes, beds, linens, clothing, school supplies and food bound for Moldova. The supplies will be distributed to schools, orphanages, foster families and homes for disabled children.

Each year, ChildsLife ships nearly $3 million worth of goods to communities in need around the world. The items are donated by businesses and individuals and are stored at ChildsLife’s 600 square-meter warehouse at its headquarters in The Netherlands. Along with regular shipments to ongoing projects, ChildsLife responds to crisis situations around the world by delivering life-saving supplies such as food, water, blankets and medicine to families struck by natural disasters and other emergencies.

ChildsLife made its very first shipment of goods in 1997, delivering potatoes to impoverished families in Romania. Since then, ChildsLife has sent more than10,000 tons of supplies – an average of 50 shipments a year – to hundreds of communities in dozens of countries.
