HIV-Women groups

ChildsLife knows that education is the key to stopping the spread of AIDS. We sponsor AIDS programs for women in the slum of Kibera, helping remove the taboo of talking about the disease and providing information to prevent its spread. Twice a week, mothers with AIDS attend meetings where they are taught about new treatments, sex education and how to protect their unborn babies from AIDS. Social workers at the center monitor the women’s health and distribute food, toiletries and other essential supplies at the weekly meetings. Perhaps most importantly, the women learn that they are not alone in their battle against the disease.

HIV-Women Group

When ChildsLife first started the AIDS program, mothers would hold weekly collections to raise money to buy coffins for themselves and their friends – knowing they would soon die from the disease. Today, because of the assistance from ChildsLife, these women are living longer, healthier lives and now hold weekly collections to buy blankets, soaps and other supplies that they and their children can use. They also make colorful batik fabric, embroideries and detergents that they then sell at the market to gain their own income.
