Families in Romania are among the poorest in Europe. Thousands of children are abandoned each year by parents who cannot afford to feed or care for them. In 2004, nearly 10,000 infants were abandoned in maternity wards and paediatric hospitals across the country. Thousands more were forced to live on the streets because their parents were abusive or unable to care for them.

Romanian children in a home

Children with mental or physical disabilities face the greatest threat of abandonment. Government agencies and private charities have built “children’s houses” across Romania in order to take in these homeless children. These institutions house more than 27,000 children. They are often under-funded, over-crowded and frequently lack basic needs such as hot water and sanitary supplies.

Each year ChildsLife sends funding and dozens of truck loads of goods to these children’s houses. We provide essentials such as food, clothing and toiletries as well as educational materials and toys to help improve the daily lives of these children.
