After-school programs
Life is difficult for those living in poverty in Romania. Three and four generations of family members often live in tiny one-room apartments. Unemployed parents cannot afford to provide daily meals for their children. Abuse and alcoholism are common threats in the home. In order to escape such conditions, children frequently spend as

much time as possible with their friends on the streets,  paving a dangerous path for them to become full-time street children.

At the after-school programs, children get a meal and are tutored

To help prevent children from ending up on the street, ChildsLife sponsors after-school shelters for kids living in extreme poverty. These schools offer a safe place to play, study and relax. Social workers at these shelters help children with emotional problems and identify those with special needs. These after-school centres only receive a small amount of government funding. With our support, they provide children hot meals, tutoring services, computer skills and emotional support on a daily basis. Children who attend these programs are more likely to finish school and stay off the streets.

Across Romania ChildsLife is partnering with government agencies and private charities. We work together with the Romanian Department of Child Protection and the Federation of International Community Educators (FICE) to provide assistance to more than 800 families and more than 8,000 children.
