Program WASH

Lack of clean drinking water and sanitation, sickens and kills thousands of people every day. The lack of good sanitation, water and good hygiene has many other serious consequences. Children walk hours a day to get clean drinking water and miss education. It is also common that girls do not go to school because sanitary facilities at school are missing.

Extreme thirst and disease prevent children from going to school. Harvests fail, livestock die and often people are too sick to work. Without water, sanitation and hygiene, sustainable development is simply not possible. Access to clean water, good sanitation and knowledge about good hygiene ensures a reduction in mortality, better health and better educational results. In addition, it is a crucial step in combating poverty and creating sustainable development.

That is why it is high on the agenda of ChildsLife.

What does ChildsLife do

Since 1998 ChildsLife has been involved in water and irrigation projects. In extreme dry areas in Kenya wells are drilled, water storage tanks are built and if possible irrigation lines are constructed. Since 2002 ChildsLife also installs water tanks and water catchment systems at schools in different regions of Kenya. These tanks provide enough water to drink, prepare lunches, enable good hygiene practices and even give the children some water to take home.
Besides water systems ChildsLife provides schools with toilets and sinks. ChildsLife’s work does not stop there. ChildsLife works closely together with teachers in schools and communities to bring about changes in local hygiene practices. Also advice and products to prevent covid19 are part of the program.

Hygiene practice support

Hygiene practice support

During and after the corona pandemic, ChildsLife carried out additional WASH activities among beneficiaries. Schools were required (and eager) to comply with the corona safety measures. They needed thermo guns, hand washing points with running water, soap and disinfectants, and a supply of masks.  At the vast majority of public schools, these facilities were neither provided nor accessible due to lack of funding. ChildsLife worked with several schools in slum areas and rural areas ...

Water tanks and water catchment systems

ChildsLife installs water tanks are at schools in several remote and marginalized regions of Kenya such as Makueni and Maasai Olepolos. As part of the school development program water tanks are installed at schools. These water tanks have a rainwater harvesting system, hand wash basins and a drinking water point so that all students have access to clean drinking water. In most cases, a few days of rainfall will provide enough water to fill several 10,000 litre water tanks. This allows for ...

Borehole with pipelines in Kajiado

ChildsLife installed a 170 meter deep borehole in the Kajiado district in Kenya including 4 kilometers of pipeline to several drinking water points for the community for both people and livestock. This intervention has a large and sustainable impact on the entire community of 6000 people. Women and children no longer have to travel long distances to fetch often polluted water and cattle are now healthy. Healthy herds mean a stable income for families. Children can go to school because ...
