In Kenya, roughly one in four people lack access to clean drinking water. Girls are hit hardest: without water nearby, they regularly miss school because they often have to walk miles to fetch water — frequently from polluted riverbeds.
Joyce (9) is one of them, a student at a school in Makueni. Every other day, she gets up before sunrise to search for water with a jerrycan. On those days, she misses school. While she dreams of becoming a doctor one day, that dream is far from guaranteed.
ChildsLife has a simple yet effective solution: water tanks at schools. Each tank collects up to 10,000 liters of rainwater during the rainy season and is refilled when needed. The filtered water isn’t just safe to drink — it’s also used for handwashing and preparing school lunches.
Over the past 29 years, ChildsLife has installed 127 water tanks at schools in Kenya, thanks to the support of loyal donors.
This year, we want to install new water tanks at 3 primary schools in Makueni, Kenya, so that children like Joyce no longer have to choose between fetching water and going to school.
